Goshinkosai is a vital ritual held at Usa Jingu in Usa City, Oita Prefecture, as part of the Natsu Kooshi Oiwai (Summer Grand Celebration). This deeply historical festival has records dating back to the Heian period and was once known for its spirited and vigorous atmosphere. The sight of the three divine palanquins carrying the three deities (Hachiman Okami, Hime Okami, and Empress Jingu) traveling from the Jingu (Upper Shrine) to the Tonno-miya (Lower Shrine) is truly breathtaking.
The greatest charm of this festival is the magnificent procession where Shinto priests in historical attire, officials, and young boys playing traditional music march alongside the three divine palanquins. The movement of the "Oshiri" (descending from the Upper Shrine) and the "Oagari" (ascending to the Upper Shrine) creates a profound sense of sacredness.
On August 1st, the middle day of the festival, the "Yabusame" (traditional horseback archery) ritual is performed at the Obozan approach, following the strict etiquette of the Ogasawara school. This is a rare opportunity to witness traditional martial arts up close. Furthermore, on the night of August 2nd, the "Yakuyoke Fireworks Display" takes place, adding a brilliant and colorful conclusion to the sacred festivities. The essence of Goshinkosai lies in experiencing both the solemnity of the rituals and the splendor of the fireworks.
The festival is held annually over three days from July 31 to August 2.

Goshinkosai is not just an event, but a sacred ritual preceded by strict purification rites, such as the sea-cleansing (Shiokaki) by priests. When observing the historical costumes and traditional ceremonies, it is respectful to maintain a quiet and observant demeanor. Pay close attention to the movement of the procession during the "Oshiri" and "Oagari" segments.
As the festival is held in mid-summer, we recommend bringing a hat and plenty of water to prevent heatstroke, and wearing breathable clothing.
