Gifu Matsuri is a grand celebration marking the annual festivals of several important shrines in Gifu City, including Inaba Shrine, Kanemari Shrine, and Kashimori Shrine. Rooted in the history of the Sengoku-era castle town, this festival is a celebrated piece of cultural heritage and was officially designated as a "Japan Heritage" site in 2015. It is closely linked with the "Dousan Matsuri," creating a high-energy atmosphere that transforms the entire city into a vibrant spring celebration.
The main attraction is the sight of four magnificent, designated cultural property floats (Hiruko-guruma, Atakaguruma, Kiyokage-guruma, and Odoriguruma) and the powerful energy of the portable shrines (mikoshi). A true highlight is the "Karakuri" performance, where intricate mechanical puppets are operated atop the floats. You can witness the exquisite traditional craftsmanship up close, such as the Benkei and Togashi figures on the Atakaguruma or the sea and mountain gods on the Kiyokage-guruma. For a magical experience, visit the Inaba Shrine Yoimiya (evening festival) to enjoy the festive spirit accompanied by spectacular fireworks lighting up the night sky.
The primary festival date is April 5th each year. Additionally, the Shinkosai ritual, the Inaba Shrine Yoimiya festivities, the Gifu Matsuri Mikoshi Parade, and the Dousan Matsuri are typically held around the first Saturday of April.
The festivities take place throughout the central areas of Gifu City, specifically around the Inaba, Kanemari, and Kashimori Shrines and the surrounding downtown streets.
Gifu Matsuri is a large-scale event with multiple overlapping ceremonies, including the Shinkosai and the Mikoshi Parade. To make the most of your visit, plan your movements around the specific rituals you wish to see. The evening festivities (Yoimiya), fireworks, and the mechanical float performances are exceptionally popular and draw large crowds.
Since you will be walking outdoors for extended periods and experiencing the intense energy of the crowds and parades, we recommend wearing comfortable, easy-to-move-in clothing.
