Guide
The Gero Onsen Matsuri is the most significant summer event in Gero City, Gifu Prefecture. This three-day festival captures the traditional spirit and vibrant energy of Gero Onsen, one of Japan's three most famous hot spring resorts. The program offers a sensory feast, ranging from the powerful, rhythmic movements of dragons to the grand, melodic displays of fireworks.
The festival's greatest charm is the variety of unique performances scheduled for each day. The first night features the 'Ryujin Fire Festival,' where five dragons dance energetically amidst exploding firecrackers and flames, creating a truly awe-inspiring spectacle. On the third night, the 'Gero Onsen Fireworks Musical Summer Performance' takes center stage, offering an artistic live show where fireworks are perfectly synchronized with music and light. You can also enjoy the lively atmosphere of the town with the Mikoshi portable shrine parades, Gero dances, and vibrant Samba parades.
The festival is held annually for three days starting from the first Saturday of August. Please note that specific timings may vary by year.
The festivities take place throughout the Gero Onsen hot spring street area.
The main events, such as the Ryujin Fire Festival and the Fireworks Musical, take place at night. We recommend experiencing both the traditional rituals and the modern, high-tech light shows. For the fireworks, it is best to find a spot where the sound is clear to fully enjoy the synchronized musical experience.
As this is an outdoor nighttime event, please wear comfortable clothing. Since temperatures can drop after sunset, bringing a light jacket or wrap is recommended. Please check the official website for the latest event details.
