The Gangara Fire Festival is a traditional fire festival held every year on August 24th in Ikeda City, Osaka. With a history dating back to the Edo period (1644), the festival is held to pray for protection against fire and for the safety of families. In 2010, it was designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Osaka Prefecture. This deeply rooted community event features the lighting of the "Dai" character on the slopes of Mt. Mayama and a spectacular procession of massive torches through the streets.
The absolute highlight of this festival is the procession of the "O-taimochi" (Great Torches). Watching these massive torches, weighing approximately 100kg and standing about 4 meters tall, march through the streets while scattering sparks is a breathtaking sight. Additionally, the sight of the "Dai" character glowing on the side of Mt. Mayama creates a majestic and photogenic atmosphere. You can experience the intense energy of the festival through the rhythmic sounds of the bells, which are the namesake of the "Gangara" festival.
The festival is held annually on August 24th. Since the date is fixed every year, it is easy to plan your visit for the end of the Japanese summer.
The festival takes place at Mt. Mayama and various locations throughout Ikeda City, Osaka.
To get a close-up view of the massive torch procession, we recommend watching from near the City Hall or along the shopping street. To see the beautiful glowing characters on the mountain, look up from the Ikeda Station area. The ritual involving "Kodomo-taimochi" (children's torches) is also a significant and charming part of this tradition.
