Event Overview

The Fukushima Waraji Matsuri is a signature summer event in Fukushima City. Rooted in the ancient 'Shinobu Sanzan Akomairi' winter rituals of the Edo period, it evolved into a major summer festival in 1970. The highlight is the sight of the massive 'Waraji' (straw sandals)—the largest in Japan—being carried through the streets. In 2019, the festival underwent a modern transformation produced by musician Yoshihide Otomo, blending traditional flute and taiko drumming with an energetic, contemporary style. It is now celebrated as one of the six major festivals of the Tohoku region.

The main spectacle is the appearance of the colossal 'Waraji' sandals. You can enjoy a diverse range of performances, from the traditional 'Waraji Odori' folk dance to the modern, rap-infused 'Dancing Soda Night.' Another crowd favorite is the 'Waraji Race,' where participants—ranging from elementary students to adults—compete in a lively race while carrying or pulling the giant sandals. Whether you are drawn to the traditional rituals or the modern dance beats, the energy of Fukushima is truly infectious.

Schedule

The festival is held annually in early August. The typical schedule is as follows:

  • *Day 1**: Features the Waraji Odori (Parts I & II) and the Dancing Soda Night (Part I).
  • *Day 2**: Features the Waraji Race (Elementary School, Women's, and General categories) and the Dancing Soda Night (Part II).
  • *Day 3**: Following tradition, the Waraji and Ema (votive tablets) are ceremoniously offered at the Shinobu-san Haguro Shrine.
