Event Overview

Esashi Jinku Matsuri is a traditional festival held every May in Esashi, Oshu City, Iwate Prefecture. Rooted in the historic IwadĹŤ Fire Protection Festival, this event has been a community-driven celebration since 1974. The festivities take place over two days: the 'Yoimatsuri' (Eve Festival) on May 3rd and the 'Honmatsuri' (Main Festival) on May 4th. It is a grand event where over 1,000 local citizens participate in massive parades and special dances, showcasing deep-rooted community bonds across generations.

Highlights & How to Enjoy

The festival is defined by its overwhelming scale and energy. The absolute must-see is the 'Esashi Kado Odori: Momoka Taigunmai,' a dynamic performance featuring 100 dancers. Another highlight is the 'Esashi Jinku Grand Parade,' where more than 1,000 residents march through the streets. You can also witness the 'Toshiwai-ren'—a special dance performed by those reaching milestone ages like 25 and 42—which is a unique tradition of this festival.

During the evening of the Yoimatsuri, the atmosphere becomes even more festive with concerts on a special stage at Odori Park and lively 'Yomise' (night stalls) lining the streets. It is the perfect way to experience the essence of a Japanese festival, blending traditional dance with modern entertainment and delicious street food.

The main venues are Odori Park and the surrounding shopping districts in Esashi, Oshu City.

  • *Access from Station**: Approximately a 10-minute drive from Mizusawa-Esashi Station (Tohoku Shinkansen).
  • *Parking**: Available at Esashi General Branch Office and JA Esashi Main Office. However, due to extreme congestion, using the free shuttle bus is highly recommended.

Tips for Visitors

During the festival, the main streets become a pedestrian-only zone filled with food stalls. For the best view of the parades, find a spot near Odori Park or along the parade route. Since the evening festivities center around the park stage, it is a good idea to prepare for a cooler evening outdoors.
