Chikutsu Hinokami Matsuri is a rare and powerful traditional event held annually at Chikutsu Kashima-gu Shrine in Nishi-ku, Kumamoto City. The festival commemorates a historical event from approximately 1,100 years ago, when local residents defended the port against invaders by throwing burning wood. It is celebrated as a unique and energetic "eccentric festival" where fire and sparks fly through the air in a dramatic display of strength.
The main attraction is the "Battle of Fire," a high-energy confrontation amidst swirling sparks. Bundles of dried leaves and wood are ignited within the shrine grounds, creating a sea of flames and intense crackling sounds. Single men (the defenders) and married men (the attackers) engage in a fierce battle, wielding traditional poles to throw fire at one another. The air is filled with the shouts of "Hanenka!" (Drop it down!) as the ritual unfolds. The climax occurs when the "Oyama"—a structure made of bamboo—is ignited, culminating in the dramatic sound of bursting bamboo.
The festival takes place every year on October 14. The evening begins with a simple Kagura (traditional ritual dance) at Chikutsu Kashima-gu, followed by the lighting of the sacred fire to initiate the main event.
