The Biwako Great Fireworks Festival is a prestigious tradition held off the coast of Otsu Port in Shiga Prefecture. Held annually on August 8, this event is famous for its unique water-based displays over Lake Biwa. Past highlights have even included special themed fireworks, making it a truly diverse and captivating program.
The main attraction is the massive 'Wide Star Mine' display, featuring large-scale shells launched from tubes tilted up to 30 degrees. This dynamic, angled launch creates an overwhelming sense of scale. The display is split between two main areas—the waters off Otsu Port and the area near Biwako Hall—allowing visitors to enjoy different visual styles of the fireworks.

Expect heavy crowds and temporary road closures around the venue. Stations like JR Otsu and Zeze will be extremely busy immediately after the fireworks end. To ensure a smooth experience, plan for extra travel time and be aware that some roads may be restricted to pedestrians only.
