Azuki no Shinmei Matsuri is a traditional ritual held at Shinmei-gu Shrine in Azuki, Yanai City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is a sacred ceremony to pray for good health, bountiful harvests, and protection from misfortune. The highlight is the 'Okoshi-tate' ceremony, where two massive structures called 'Shinmei'—standing approximately 20 meters tall—are erected at the east and west locations. This unique festival combines the 'Shinmei Matsuri' and the 'Kobayakawa Clan Military God Festival,' and was designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property in 2009. Young men dressed in traditional white garments perform the solemn rites to summon the divine power.
The most breathtaking moment of this festival is the scale of the sacred structures and the ritual that follows. On the morning of the festival, during the 'Okoshi-tate' ceremony at Azuki Beach, you can witness the sacred moment when the divine spirit descends amidst fluttering paper streamers (shide). At 8:00 PM, the climax arrives as the representatives light the massive structures on fire. Watching the 20-meter structures fall toward the shore while engulfed in roaring flames is a truly unforgettable spectacle.
Beyond the fire, the festival features a variety of traditional performances. You can enjoy the powerful rhythms of the Shinmei Taiko drums and the rhythmic Shinmei dances. The event also features historical character dances, including figures like the Shinsengumi, Yagyu Tajima-no-kami, and the legendary thief Nezumi Kozo. Additionally, the energetic 'Joge' dance, where men carry heavy loads and move through the streets with a distinctive step, brings the town to life.

The event begins in the morning with the ritual of erecting the sacred structures and reaches its dramatic climax in the evening when the structures are set ablaze.
