Event Overview

Located in Katakai, Ojiya City, Niigata Prefecture, the Asahara Shrine Autumn Festival Fireworks (Katakai Matsuri) is a traditional celebration with a 400-year history. This area is renowned as the birthplace of the famous 3-shaku firework and is world-famous for launching the massive 4-shaku shell. The spectacular display, filled with deep-rooted local traditions, creates a breathtaking atmosphere as the thunderous booms echo through the surrounding mountains.

Highlights & Best Ways to Enjoy

The absolute highlight is the launch of the world-class 4-shaku shell at 10:00 PM on both nights. The sheer scale of the light and the physical impact of the explosion are truly unforgettable. Most of the fireworks are large-scale shells, featuring impressive multi-stage launches and rapid-fire sequences.

Additionally, the second day features a rare "Daytime Fireworks" display between 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM, a unique spectacle found in very few festivals. You can also enjoy the vibrant energy of the town with the "Tama-okuri" floats parading through the streets and the traditional sounds of "Shagiri" music.

Schedule

The event will be held over two days on September 11 (Fri) and September 12 (Sat), 2026. The main fireworks display runs from 19:30 to 22:20.

Venue & Access

The venue is the area near the rear of Asahara Shrine in Katakai. Because of the massive crowds, we highly recommend checking your route in advance.

Tips for Visitors

For the best experience, we recommend booking "桟敷席" (Reserved Seating) to enjoy the massive scale and sound from a closer vantage point. These seats require advance reservation. During the festival, approximately 110 food stalls line the streets, offering local specialties and seasonal treats. Please enjoy the local culture and the festive atmosphere responsibly.

What to Bring & Etiquette

As this is an outdoor nighttime event, please bring clothing suitable for temperature changes. Please be aware that the explosive sounds are extremely loud and can be physically jarring. If you are using reserved seating, please check the official website for specific booking details. Please follow local etiquette regarding trash disposal and being mindful of those around you to preserve this traditional festival.
