Event Overview

The Arimatsu Shibori Matsuri is a vibrant celebration of Arimatsu Shibori, a traditional tie-dyeing craft with over 400 years of history, held in the Arimatsu district of Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. This festival offers a rare opportunity to witness the intricate techniques of Edo-period dyeing through live demonstrations, exhibitions, and hands-on workshops.

The Arimatsu district is designated as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. The area is famous for its beautiful scenery of white-walled buildings and traditional lattice doors, which provide a stunning backdrop for the colorful tie-dyed products displayed throughout the streets.

During the festival, numerous booths from long-established workshops and young artisans will line the streets. You can find a wide variety of products ranging from everyday items like handkerchiefs, scarves, and bags to high-end kimonos and home decor. Keep an eye out for limited-edition designs and one-of-a-kind pieces.

Artisan Demonstrations and Workshops

Watch master artisans perform the delicate art of binding fabric to create intricate patterns. A major highlight is the hands-on dyeing workshop, where you can create your own patterns on items like handkerchiefs or small pouches. It is a wonderful way to experience the depth of Japanese craftsmanship firsthand.

Stroll Through a Historic Townscape

The streets of Arimatsu retain the atmosphere of an Edo-period post town, offering photogenic views at every corner. We highly recommend walking through the district in a Kimono or Yukata to fully immerse yourself in the nostalgic scenery of fluttering fabric curtains (noren) and traditional architecture.

The festival takes place throughout the historic streets along the old Tokaido road, centered around the Arimatsu Station area in Midori-ku, Nagoya.

Access

The main event area is a short walk from Meitetsu Arimatsu Station.

• Approximately 25 minutes from Nagoya Station to Arimatsu Station via the Meitetsu Nagoya Line (Local or Semi-Express trains).

Travel Tips

Avoiding Crowds

The area can become quite crowded, especially around midday. If you wish to enjoy the workshops or browse the exhibitions at a relaxed pace, we recommend arriving early in the morning.

Food and Rest Stops

You will find various food stalls offering local Nagoya specialties, as well as charming cafes housed in renovated traditional buildings. These are perfect spots to take a break and enjoy the historic atmosphere.

Clothing & Etiquette

What to Wear and Bring

Since you will be walking through a historic district, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. If you plan to participate in a dyeing workshop, consider wearing clothes that you don't mind getting slightly stained, or bring an apron.

Payment and Reservations

Many food stalls and small shops primarily accept cash. It is a good idea to carry Japanese Yen (coins and small bills) for smooth transactions. For workshops, please check if prior reservations are required or if you can join on the day via official sources.
