The Aomori Fireworks Display is one of the largest and most prestigious fireworks events in Aomori Prefecture. Officially known as the 'Aomori Nebuta Festival Sponsored Fireworks Display,' it is held every year on August 7, marking the grand finale of the famous Aomori Nebuta Festival. It is a magnificent and traditional way to celebrate the climax of summer in Aomori.
The most extraordinary feature of this event—one of the few in the world—is the collaboration between the massive, illuminated 'Nebuta' floats and the fireworks. You can witness a truly mystical sight as the glowing Nebuta floats approach through the sea while fireworks illuminate the night sky.
The program begins with a signal at 19:00. Around 19:15, selected Nebuta floats will enter the port to begin the maritime procession. During the float procession, the fireworks will focus on more atmospheric 'early shots' to ensure safety. From approximately 19:45, once the floats have departed, the program shifts to a high-intensity display featuring star mines and massive shell bursts, filling the entire sky with light and sound.
The event takes place annually on August 7. The typical schedule is as follows:
The venue is the area around Aomori Port (near Shin-Chuo Pier and Aoiumi Park).
On the day of the event, traffic restrictions will be in place around the ASPAM building, Bay Bridge, and La Bridge. Since vehicle access to the ASPAM area from the station will be restricted, we strongly recommend using public transportation.
To enjoy the powerful displays up close, we recommend booking paid viewing seats. Reserved seating areas, such as pipe chairs, are typically set up at Shin-Chuo Pier and Aoiumi Park. Understanding the flow of the program—from the arrival of the floats to the intense star mines after 19:45—will help you fully appreciate the spectacle.
As the event is held near the waterfront, we recommend bringing a light jacket or clothing suitable for the evening sea breeze and potential weather changes. Please check the official website in advance for details regarding reserved seat bookings. Please also allow plenty of time for travel due to local traffic restrictions.
