The Ako Gishi Festival is the most significant traditional event in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture. It is held annually to commemorate the historic day of the Ako Gishi's raid (December 14th). With a history spanning over 100 years since its inception in 1903, this festival is a deeply rooted cultural cornerstone that symbolizes the heritage of the Ako region.
The absolute highlight is the "Chushingura Parade," a spectacle that transforms the entire town into a living scene from an Edo-period picture scroll. The parade features a vibrant mix of brass band performances, high-energy sword fighting (tate), and a colorful procession of young women in traditional attire. You will also witness the majestic Daimyo procession, recreating the grandeur of the feudal era. The sight of ornate floats (dashi) and the procession of the 47 samurai (Gishi) will transport you directly into the heart of this legendary tale.
Additionally, the festivities begin a week early with "Chushingura Week," featuring various local events and limited-time activities throughout the city. As night falls, the atmosphere becomes truly magical with lanterns and illuminations lighting up the streets, offering a serene and nostalgic experience.

The "Chushingura Week" festivities begin one week prior to the main event. During this time, various celebrations occur across the city. You can also enjoy the beautiful evening atmosphere with lantern displays around Oishi Shrine and Kaku-ji Temple.
The main festivities take place around the Ako Castle ruins and the Oshiro-dori area (including Ikitsugi Hiroba).
The main events, including the parade and float processions, attract large crowds along the streets. This is a premier opportunity to witness Japanese history up close.
