Event Overview

Agetsu Shinmei Matsuri is a highly prestigious festival designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan. It is characterized by a deep spiritual connection to the local community, featuring the resonant sounds of the Shinmei Taiko drums, the unique Shinmei dance, and the dramatic climax known as "Hayashikata," where the sacred deity is burned. Schedule

The festival progresses through several stages from morning to night. Please note the different start times for the East and West locations:

  • *Morning**: Shinmei Taiko begins at 08:00 (East direction) / 08:30 (West direction).
  • *Afternoon**: Shinmei Dance begins at 14:00 (East direction) / 14:30 (West direction).
  • *Night**: The Hayashikata ritual (burning the deity) begins at 18:20 (East direction) / 19:00 (West direction).

Venue & Access

The festival takes place around the shores in front of the Higashi-Shinmei-gu and Nishi-Shinmei-gu shrines. Due to road closures, public transport or temporary parking is highly recommended.

By Car

  • *From Hikari direction**: Take National Route 188, turn right at "Youme Town Yanai" toward Kamoseki (approx. 8km).
  • *From Iwakuni direction**: Take National Route 188, turn left at "Bizcom Yanai Stadium" toward Kamoseki (approx. 7km).

By Public Transport

  • *Bus**: Take the Bocho Bus (bound for Yanai Medical Center) from Yanai Station (Platform 3). The ride takes about 18 minutes. Get off at "Yanai Medical Center-mae" and walk for approximately 14 minutes.

Tips for Visitors

To fully enjoy the festival, timing is key. During the morning Shinmei Taiko, the processions may cause local traffic delays, so we recommend arriving early. The night ritual is particularly mystical, so be sure to check the sunset schedule to ensure you don't miss the start of the ceremony.

What to Bring & Etiquette

As this is an outdoor event held in February, please prepare thoroughly for the cold. We strongly recommend wearing heavy winter clothing and bringing sturdy, waterproof shoes.
