Event Overview

Dotchan Matsuri is a traditional festival in Imari City, Saga, celebrating the historical prosperity of Imari Port during the Edo period. The name "Dotchan" comes from the local dialect meaning "which way?"—a nod to the many merchants who once flocked to the port and were charmed by the local hospitality. The 35th edition in 2026 will feature a diverse program hosted at both indoor and outdoor facilities at the Imari Civic Center.

Highlights & How to Enjoy

The absolute highlight is the "Onna Mikoshi" (Female Portable Shrine) procession, where women dressed in vibrant, colorful costumes carry the heavy shrine to energetic chants. The sight of the swaying shrine is truly powerful and electrifying. Don't miss the rhythmic Imari Taiko drumming and various stage performances that heighten the festival's energy. You can also participate in workshops to learn about local traditional crafts, offering a hands-on way to connect with Imari's rich history.

Venue & Access

The venue is the Imari Civic Center (Imari City, Saga). Access is very convenient via public transportation.

  • *By Train**: A very short walk from JR Chikuhi Line or Matsuura Railway "Imari Station" (approx. 3–5 minutes).
  • *By Car**: About 15 minutes from the Nishi-Kyushu Expressway "Imari Higashishiraki IC."
  • *Parking**: There is no dedicated festival parking. Please use nearby coin parking lots (e.g., Mitsui Repark Imari Ekimae). Expect traffic restrictions on the day, so please allow extra travel time.

Tips for Visitors

Admission to the festival is free. The venue will be filled with local product markets and food stalls. Be sure to try the local specialties like Imari Beef steak or skewers, and the famous Saga soul food, "Sicilian Rice." There will also be traditional carnival games (like target shooting) and exhibitions of working vehicles (police cars, fire trucks), making it a perfect event for families with children.

What to Bring & Etiquette

As the festival takes place in late May, it can be quite sunny. We recommend bringing a hat, parasol, and comfortable walking shoes (sneakers). Since many food stalls deal in small amounts, please carry cash (coins and bills) for smoother transactions.
