Event Overview

Kumagawa Juku is a historic post town known for the "Saba Kaido" (Mackerel Highway) in Wakasa, Fukui Prefecture. This annual autumn event is a special collaboration celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Preservation District for Important Traditional Buildings and the Wakasa Art Festival. It offers a rare opportunity to experience a seamless blend of Edo-period charm and modern entertainment set against a stunning historical backdrop.

Highlights & Activities

The most iconic attraction is the "Tin Goldfish Race" held in the Maekawa waterway. Watching the colorful, nostalgic goldfish swim through the water is a delight for all ages. You can also feel like you've traveled back in time by seeing rickshaws, traditional musicians (Chindon-ya), and palanquin bearers (Kagoya) moving through the streets. The event also features a dynamic mix of traditional and modern performances, including Wadaiko drumming, calligraphy demonstrations, street live music, and even e-sports.

The event takes place on October 4th, from 10:00 to 15:00. Planned activities include the Tin Goldfish Race, Wadaiko drumming, rickshaw rides, Edo-style candy making, shooting games (Shateki), balloon art, street performances, e-sports, and the Matsuki Shrine festival. Venue & Access

The venue is Saba Kaido Kumagawa Juku (Wakasa, Mikata Kami District, Fukui).

Approximately 15 minutes from the Wakasa-Nakachu IC on the Maizuru Wakasa Expressway. Temporary parking will be available on the day.

Take the JR Bus (Wakae Line bound for Omi-Imazu Station) from JR Kami-Naka Station and get off at the "Wakasa-Kumagawa" bus stop. IC cards (transportation cards) can be used on the bus.

Tips for Visitors

While exploring the historic streets, enjoy various food stalls and a food court featuring local flavors. Some historic buildings may also be opened to the public for free, allowing you to admire their architectural beauty. We recommend walking through the streets with friends or family to enjoy the unique combination of historical atmosphere and modern entertainment.
