Chinowa Matsuri Festival

Event Overview

Chinowa Matsuri, also known as "Wakuguri," is a sacred ritual held to perform the "Nagoshi no Harae" (Summer Purification). Participants walk through a large ring made of cogon grass (chigaya) to wash away the impurities and misfortunes of the first half of the year. This ancient tradition uses the vital energy of the grass to refresh both mind and body for the hot summer months.

Highlights & Activities

The centerpiece of the festival is the sacred "Chinowa-kuguri" ritual. The ceremony begins with the priest cutting the sacred rope to open the path, allowing participants to walk through the ring to purify themselves. Beyond the ritual, the festival features a lively stage with various performances. You can enjoy a unique blend of traditional Shinto music and dance alongside modern entertainment, such as bubble shows, creating a festive atmosphere for all ages.

The festival takes place over two days.

July 30

• *18:00~ Opening Ritual**: The priest cuts the sacred rope on the large grass ring to officially begin the ceremony. Participants use paper figures (hitogata) to symbolically transfer and purify their impurities.
• *19:00~ Dedication Stage**: Enjoy a variety of musical and dance performances on the special festival stage.

July 31

• *11:00~ Main Shrine Ceremony**: A sacred ritual to report the summer purification to the deities. Please note that registration at the shrine office is required before entering the inner sanctuary.
• *15:00~ Water-Sprinkling Event**: A refreshing activity using well water from the shrine grounds, featuring bubble performances.
• *17:30~ Dedication Stage**: The evening festivities continue with various performances on the stage.

Chinowa Matsuri is a sacred Shinto ritual rather than a standard tourist event. By following the proper customs, you can pray for health and protection for the coming months. During the ritual, participants use paper figures to represent the transfer of impurities.

What to Bring, Dress Code & Etiquette

Dress Code

When participating in the inner shrine ceremonies, please dress respectfully. Casual attire such as T-shirts or shorts may be restricted from entering the sacred areas. If you plan to join the water-sprinkling event, please wear clothes that are okay to get wet.

Registration

If you wish to participate in the Main Shrine Ceremony, please complete your registration at the shrine office at least 10 minutes before the start time.
