The Boryeong Mud Festival is a world-renowned summer experience held at Daecheon Beach in Boryeong, Chungcheongnam-do. Originally started in 1998 to promote local cosmetics, it has evolved into one of Korea's most iconic international tourism events. The mud used throughout the festival is famous for being rich in minerals and gentle on the skin. It is a high-energy celebration where mud play, music, and the freedom of the beach come together.
The biggest draw of this festival is the variety of activities that let you get covered in mud! From mud slides and mud pools to mud wrestling and obstacle courses, there is something for everyone. As the sun goes down, the excitement shifts to K-POP live performances, foam parties, and even spectacular air shows by the Black Eagles aerobatic team. You can spend your day playing in the mud and your nights soaking up the electric beach atmosphere and music.
The festival runs for 17 days from July 24 to August 9. Operating hours are 13:00–18:00 on weekdays, and 10:00–18:00 on weekends (Friday–Sunday). Please note that the experience zones pause for a break from 13:30 to 14:30 daily. Special night sessions are available on July 24 and August 6, extending the fun until 21:30. Note that the mud experience zones will be closed on August 5 for safety inspections.
The venue is Daecheon Beach (10 Haeseurak-gil, Boryeong-si, Chungcheongnam-do). To reach the venue from Seoul, you can take a train or an express bus. By train, it takes approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes from Seoul (such as Yongsan Station) to Daecheon Station, costing around 11,800 KRW. By express bus, the journey takes about 2 hours 10 minutes to 2.5 hours, costing roughly 15,000 KRW. Once you arrive at Daecheon Station or the bus terminal, you can take a local bus or a taxi to reach the beach area.
Preparation is key to maximizing your fun! Since most activities involve getting covered in mud, be sure to bring a change of clothes, towels, and sandals. The festival gets very crowded on weekends and during night sessions, so we recommend arriving on a weekday morning for a smoother experience. If you are traveling with children, look for the dedicated 'Family Zone' to ensure a safer and more comfortable environment.
Wear swimwear or clothes that you don't mind getting dirty. Essential items include a towel, a change of clothes, sunscreen, and a waterproof pouch for your smartphone.
