Event Overview

Located in Furaura, Aomori Prefecture, the 'Kitakinagasawa no Dai-ichō' is one of Japan's most magnificent ginkgo trees. With a history spanning over 1,000 years, it stands approximately 31m tall with a trunk circumference of about 22m. This massive tree is a designated National Natural Monument and has been revered as a sacred tree for centuries. Every autumn, during the peak foliage season, the tree is illuminated in a spectacular display known as 'Big Yellow' to celebrate its brilliant golden hue.

Highlights & Experience

The main attraction is the overwhelming presence and mystical beauty of the golden ginkgo tree as it glows in the darkness. The sight of this giant silhouette emerging from the silent night is truly breathtaking. The tree is also known as 'Tarachine no Ichō,' characterized by its unique aerial roots hanging from the trunk. Local legend says that touching these roots brings good health and fertility, allowing visitors to feel the profound vitality of nature.

Schedule

The illumination event runs from November 12 to November 30. A special lighting ceremony is scheduled for November 12 starting at 18:00. Please note that the dates and duration may change depending on the progress of the autumn colors (foliage status), so we recommend checking the latest information before your visit.

Venue & Access

The event takes place at the 'Kitakinagasawa no Dai-ichō' in Furaura, Aomori.

  • *JR Access**: Approximately a 10-minute walk from JR Kitakinagasawa Station on the JR Gonō Line.
  • *Parking**: Free parking is available (suitable for large buses).

Tips for Visitors

Temperatures drop significantly during the nighttime illumination. Since autumn nights in Aomori can be extremely cold, please prepare heavy coats or warm clothing to stay comfortable. You may also find food trucks or local stalls operating around the venue during the event.
