The Aoshima Sea Procession is a traditional ritual deeply rooted in the Aoshima area of Miyazaki City. The highlight of this festival is the 'crossing of the sea.' Led by young local members, the sacred portable shrine (Mikoshi) is placed on a boat to circle the island in a ritual known as 'Kaijo-togyo' (Sea Procession).
This tradition began in 1948, born from the deep wishes of local fishermen to honor the deity at Umitsumi-no-miya. The sight of dozens of fishing boats, adorned with large, colorful 'Tairyo-ki' (good catch flags), following the lead boat (Gozabune) through the beautiful blue waters of Aoshima is truly magnificent, radiating the raw energy of the ocean and the local community.
