Located in Kiryu City, Gunma Prefecture, Houtokuji Temple hosts the special "Autumn Reflection" event as the season deepens. The highlight of this event is the "Yuka Momiji" (Floor Autumn Leaves), where the vibrant autumn colors of the surrounding trees are reflected like a mirror on the temple's highly polished black floor. This rare and breathtaking sight offers a serene, otherworldly experience that transports visitors away from the everyday. With over 100 maple trees surrounding the area, you can fully immerse yourself in the changing seasons.

The main attraction is the stunning "Reflection." The sight of red and yellow maple leaves mirrored on the glossy, lacquer-like black floor creates a mesmerizing, almost weightless sensation. Additionally, special evening illuminations are held, allowing you to experience a more dramatic and cinematic side of the autumn colors. The event is held at Houtokuji Temple in Kiryu City, Gunma.

  • *Parking**: Free parking is available for standard cars and motorcycles. Note that microbuses or larger vehicles require a reservation in advance; without a reservation, entry may be restricted.
  • *Access**: The walk from the parking area to the main hall takes approximately 2 to 5 minutes.

Tips for Visitors

To get the best view of the reflection, timing is key. Because of the way light hits the temple, visiting after 10:00 AM is recommended to avoid backlight issues and capture the clearest reflection. As the sun sets, the interior of the hall becomes darker, so we recommend arriving by 3:00 PM to enjoy the colors clearly. For the evening illumination, crowds tend to peak around 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM, so consider visiting slightly earlier or later for a smoother experience.

What to Bring & Etiquette

  • *Footwear**: The temple grounds feature gravel paths and stairs leading to the main hall. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes.
  • *Photography**: The use of tripods or monopods is prohibited to prevent accidents and ensure smooth movement. Please enjoy photography using your handheld camera or smartphone.
  • *Etiquette**: Eating and drinking are not permitted within the temple grounds. Pets are also not allowed. Please maintain a quiet and respectful atmosphere as this is a sacred site.
