"August Workshop: Experience the Life of a Curator!" is a special program held at the Yokohama Doll Museum where children can experience the role of a "Curator." Curators play a vital role in protecting, researching, and presenting important cultural assets. This event offers a rare chance to learn about the behind-the-scenes work of a museum in a fun, engaging way.

The theme focuses on learning the origins of the "Yokohama Kaiko Ningyo" (Yokohama Opening Dolls), which symbolize the history of Yokohama. After understanding the historical background, participants will brainstorm and present ideas for dolls based on "people working in modern society." This educational process goes beyond simple crafting, helping children understand the importance of preserving culture.

The biggest draw is the opportunity to actually experience the work performed by museum professionals. Moving beyond textbooks, the process of thinking about how to communicate culture through physical objects greatly stimulates a child's creativity. By designing a doll that represents a modern person, children learn how ideas are shaped and shared with the public, fostering a deeper connection to museums.

This event will be held on Thursday, August 6, 2026. Participants should choose one of the following two sessions:

• *Date**: Thursday, August 6, 2026
• *Session 1**: 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
• *Session 2**: 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM

Venue and Access

The venue is the 4th Floor Foyer of the Yokohama Doll Museum. The calm museum environment provides an excellent setting for focused learning.

Participation Details

This event is specifically designed for children in the 4th to 6th grades (living or studying in the city). It is an ideal setting for this age group to understand Japanese traditional doll culture and museum operations.

One guardian may accompany the participant, but please note that guardians cannot participate in the program itself. Infants and preschoolers are allowed but must be supervised from the back to ensure the program proceeds without interruption.

Preparation and Etiquette

Please review the following before attending:

• *Clothing**: As this is a hands-on program, we recommend comfortable clothing that you don't mind getting slightly dirty.
• *Payment**: The workshop itself is free, but a separate admission fee for the museum is required. Admission is 200 JPY for elementary school students and 400 JPY for high school students and above. Please prepare cash for admission.
• *Language Support**: This event is conducted in Japanese. No English support or detailed instructions in English will be provided. We recommend participating if you have Japanese language-friendly support.
• *Reservation**: Advance registration via the designated method is required. Please complete the process within the application period. If capacity is reached or applications are numerous, a lottery may be held.
