Event Overview

The Yamaage Matsuri is a historic ritual held as part of the Yakumo Shrine festival in Nasukarasuyama, Tochigi. The highlight is the construction of massive temporary stages called 'Yama'—reaching 10m in height and 100m in depth—where Kabuki (Shosa Kyogen) and Kagura are performed. These beautiful structures, adorned with traditional Japanese paper, are assembled, dismantled, and moved through the streets. This event is a designated National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property and is closely related to UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Festivities typically take place over three days during the fourth week of July.

• *Sunday**: Kanko-sai (Return) where the festival reaches its peak with the intense 'Abare Mikoshi' ritual near the shrine torii gate.

Venue & Access

The event takes place in the old Nasukarasuyama town area, centered around Yakumo Shrine and six surrounding districts. During the festival, many roads will have traffic restrictions. The 'Seseragi-dori' area becomes very crowded with food stalls, so we highly recommend using public transport or walking.
