The Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival is a major event held along the Sumida River in Tokyo (near Asakusa in Taito Ward and Mukojima in Sumida Ward). One of its origins dates back to the Edo period, when fireworks were launched to promote the skills of firework makers during the cooling-off season. Today, it is celebrated as one of Japan's largest and most prestigious summer-night events, attracting crowds from all over.
The main highlight is the overwhelming scale of the display, featuring approximately 20,000 fireworks. You can witness exquisite Japanese techniques, such as traditional spherical 'warimono' fireworks and sparkling 'pokamono' shells. The event also features a fireworks competition, showcasing the skills of Japan's top masters. The fusion of historical scenery and modern pyrotechnic technology creates a truly magical atmosphere.
The event is held on July 25th. The launch schedule is planned as follows: the first venue starts at 19:00, and the second venue starts at 19:30. Both venues are expected to conclude around 20:30. Since the fireworks are launched over the Sumida River, which lacks wide riverbanks, viewing areas are primarily limited to nearby bridges and roads. There are no designated seating areas for comfortable viewing, except for the special 'Citizen Sponsorship Seats.' Most spectators will be viewing while standing or moving, so please prepare for a mobile viewing style. Due to extreme crowding, it is highly recommended to plan your return trip carefully.
