Event Overview

The Ikaho Matsuri is a traditional celebration held in the heart of the historic Ikaho Onsen district. This festival brings the spirit of local tradition to life, centered around the iconic stone stairways. While traditionally held in mid-September, the festivities have evolved into a multi-day event that celebrates the rich cultural heritage of the region.

Highlights & How to Enjoy

The most spectacular sight of this festival is the dynamic movement of the Mikoshi (portable shrines) through the steep, atmospheric stone streets of Ikaho.

• *The Grand Mikoshi Ascent**: Watch in awe as the heavy, majestic main Mikoshi is carried up the steep stone steps toward the shrine. The sight of the massive structure ascending the stairs is a powerful and impressive display of strength and tradition.
• *Tarumikoshi (Barrel Mikoshi)**: Adding even more energy to the scene, the 'Tarumikoshi' is a handmade portable shrine made from sake barrels and wooden poles. Local youths carry these through the crowds, creating an intense and exciting atmosphere as they navigate the steep stairs.
• *Traditional Sounds**: The atmosphere is filled with the rhythmic sounds of 'Kodomo Hayashi' (children's festival music) performed by local students, allowing visitors to experience the authentic sounds of a Japanese traditional festival.

• 18:45–: Children's Festival Music & Children's Tarumikoshi (Dandan Plaza)
• 19:30–: Kagami-biraki (Ceremonial Sake Barrel Breaking) (Dandan Plaza)
• 20:00–: Lanterns, Sake Barrels, and Traditional Dance (Dandan Plaza to Maruhonkan front)
• 21:00–23:00: Tarumikoshi & Festival Music Performance (Maruhonkan front to Shrine Grounds)
• 11:30–: Main Mikoshi Procession Ceremony (Ikaho Shrine Grounds)
• 12:45–: Children's Float Departure (Dandan Plaza)
• 17:30–: Tarumikoshi (Maruhonkan front to Stone Stairway area)
• 19:00–: Main Mikoshi Ascent (Maruhonkan front to Shrine Grounds)

Tips for Visitors

The festival is held in the immediate vicinity of the stone stairways. You can witness the heavy Mikoshi and the energetic Tarumikoshi up close, but please be aware that the area becomes extremely crowded and high-energy. To fully enjoy the spectacle of the Tarumikoshi racing up the stairs, we recommend finding a viewing spot well in advance.

Clothing & Etiquette

As the event takes place on the stone stairways, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Since many activities take place in the evening, please bring clothing suitable for changing temperatures.
