Togakushi Chusha Shrine

Overview

Togakushi Chusha Shrine is located at the foot of the sacred Togakushi Mountain in Togakushi, Nagano City, Nagano Prefecture. Togakushi Shrine comprises five shrines—Okusha, Chusha, Hoko-sha, Kutsuryu-sha, and Hinomiko-sha—each dedicated to significant deities. Chusha Shrine enshrines Amenoyagokoroomikane-no-Mikoto, the deity credited with devising the Iwato Kagura, a dance that played a crucial role in bringing Amaterasu Omikami out of the Heavenly Rock Cave. This deity is also revered as the God of Wisdom. Historically, Togakushi Shrine thrived as a Shugendo training ground, attracting numerous practitioners and pilgrims from across Japan. Even today, its sacred atmosphere reflects this rich history. Within Chusha Shrine's grounds stand towering ancient trees, including three cedar trees estimated to be 900 years old, allowing visitors to experience the sacred air in a peaceful setting. The approach to Okusha Shrine from Chusha Shrine is a roughly 2km path lined with cedar trees, creating a mystical ambiance.
