Shirahama Chuo Beach is located on the northern side of Shirahama Coast in Shimoda City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Shirahama Coast is divided into two parts by Shirahama Shrine: the north is called Chuo Kaigan (Central Coast), and the south is called Shirahama Ohama. Shirahama Chuo Beach is the northern part. It's a cove with a mix of sandy beach and rocky areas, known for its calm waves, making it a popular spot for families. On clear days, you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Izu Islands. Its pristine water quality has earned it spots on the Ministry of the Environment's "88 Best Beaches in Japan" and "100 Best Bathing Beaches" lists.
Besides swimming, Shirahama Chuo Beach offers opportunities for tide pooling and clam digging. Clam digging is particularly popular at Shirahama Coast, attracting many visitors. The season typically runs from April to September, with clams and short-necked clams being common finds.
The area surrounding Shirahama Chuo Beach boasts numerous restaurants and accommodations, making it ideal not just for swimming but also for sightseeing. Shimoda City itself retains its old town charm, offering a glimpse into its history. Ferries to the Izu Islands also depart from Shimoda Port, providing options for day trips or longer stays.
